When it comes to shipping apparel items from China to the United States, the carbon footprint is even higher. This is because the majority of these goods are shipped by large container ships, which are some of the most polluting vessels on the seas. The combustion of heavy fuel oil by these ships produces a significant amount of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which contribute to air pollution and acid rain. Additionally, the shipping industry is responsible for a significant amount of black carbon emissions, which have a warming effect on the planet.
While there are efforts being made to reduce the carbon footprint of shipping. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set goals to reduce the carbon emissions of ships by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels. We cannot wait that long; we are near the tipping point now.
Retailers and consumers can also play a role in reducing the carbon footprint of shipping apparel from China to the United States. This can be done by choosing products that have been manufactured and shipped using sustainable practices, and by supporting companies that have committed to reducing their carbon footprint such as Herron Apparel. ]]>The truth, however, is that while injury rates among runners are still too high, that doesn't mean that running is bad for you. In fact, many runners get injured not because of the running itself, but because they are neglecting other important aspects of their fitness routine.
One of the most significant things that many runners are missing out on is strength training. Despite the fact that strength training is essential for preventing injuries and improving performance, many runners avoid it because they believe that it will cause them to bulk up.
However, the truth is that to bulk up, you would need to engage in a specific type of weight training that is completely different from the type of strength training that runners need to do to stay healthy and injury-free. For example, someone who is bulking up might engage in a weight training program that looks like this:
Day 1: Chest, shoulders, triceps Day 2: Back and Biceps Day 3: Legs Day 4 Chest, shoulders Triceps Day 5: Back and Biceps Day 6: Legs
As you can see, there is no cardio included in this program. On the other hand, a strength training program for a runner might look like this:
Day 1: Full body pushing movements Day 2: Full body pulling movements 4 Days of running and 1 complete rest day
When compared to the weight training program for bulking up, it's clear that the volume and intensity of the strength training for runners is much lower.
It's important to note that running, as a form of cardio, will burn more calories and help in overall weight loss. But for running specific performance and injury prevention, strength training is a must. Even running a few miles a week doesn't make up for lack of strength in your legs, core, and glutes.
So, the next time you hear someone say that running is bad for your body, remember that while injury rates among runners are still too high, that doesn't mean that running is inherently bad for you. The key to staying healthy and injury-free as a runner is to engage in a well-rounded fitness routine that includes not just running but also strength training, recovery, and other forms of exercise.

Have you heard the good news? Nike sportswear and other athletic fashion brands have significantly decreased their carbon emissions? Yay!
But what is really happening? Their emissions are actually increasing upwards of 163% from 2015 to 2021...and that's not counting the emissions from their supply chains!
According to an investigation by the great journalists at The Guardian, it is in how the emissions are calculated. It is a scheme developed by the major brands, including Nike, called the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
These fashion brands do report their gross global emissions, but these are calculated against total revenue. This means that as long as their emissions increase less than their revenue increases each year, the total emissions are scored as a decrease.
The sportswear manufacturer self-reported emitting 17,975 metric tonnes of CO2 in 2015, jumping to 47,398 in 2021 – a 163% increase.
Makes it difficult to take their commitment seriously, doesn't it?
Especially when that 163% increase doesn't include the carbon emissions from their supply chains or even their own business travel, which IS addressed in the Herron Sustainability Policy. It reminds one of the chicken and the pig in explaining the difference between participating and being committed. The chicken participates in breakfast while the pig is committed.
Clever marketing you might say. Tell the world how your brand is lowering emissions which creates more demand which lowers your emissions even more. Climate change continues toward the 'point of no return' while the executives and shareholders are high-fiving all the way to the bank.

In late 2015 an apparel factory that made clothing for several major sports apparel brands burned to the ground. Nearly 300 people (a.k.a. factory workers) died in that fire. The emergency exits had chains and padlocks on them.
A tragedy like that must never happen again. Herron Apparel is made in factories with safe working conditions that allow provide regular breaks, free association, benefits, above industry wages, not to mention the school and medical facility on site that provides free education and medical services to the surrounding community.
A brand cannot exist without people. People make the clothes. People buy the clothes. The brand exists solely in their minds.
We only get one shot at a relatively short life and I love seeing how far I can push myself. It feels like a release because that is exactly what it is for me. The ultimate release for me personally is hitting goals and completing triathlons. Let’s find out what motivates you!

It's really inspiring to see these people being listed. My personal favorite is the Brownlee brothers (not that in any way am I biased being a Triathlete). Inspiration comes in so many forms and this was a highlight answer for us:

Amen to that! The most important part for us in all of this is knowing how to serve you with more relevance. In a world awash with product, price, sale: rinse and repeat. We don’t want to be that or to do that. Of course we will offer you early design access to new collections but we will be more than that and will demonstrate this in how we reward you, what with and often with no money being asked for expected.
We believe in you, we believe that an audience like ours needs to be served accordingly because we want to achieve whatever matters to each of us in this life we live. More highlights to follow from the surveys and we will run more in the future because we are here to understand and serve you, no more, no less than what good service should be.
]]>It's not very often is it? I grew up knowing that service, and how people treat each other, is paramount to feeling satisfied.
Psychologically it’s very important for each of us to feel that our voice is being heard. Too many brands have been caught in a price war and all too often they stop their ‘effort’ at the point of sale.
I wasn’t about to start a sportswear brand with a goal to serve people aged 35+ and fall into the same trap. I’m very pleased to share the first release of our survey. This went out to tens of thousands of people just like you and me.

I’m 61 years old and a seasoned triathlete and I instruct exercise classes. I think the perception that age is an issue is over. This is demonstrated by the mix of how we enjoy our favorite exercises.

As we started designing our first limited edition collection, there were several factors we wanted to take into consideration based on everything you shared and the feedback you gave us in the survey we sent out. Here are the highlights.

Comfort came up in over 50% of our surveys; that’s 1000’s of people sharing a key need and one that is often underserved. It’s a challenge that needs to be solved, so we got to work on it.

We took a long time reviewing insights like this. Where should the pocket be? Why? What size? Multiple pockets? We spent a long time walking in the shoes of those we wish to serve.
What is the mindset of success?
Much like that which inspired us for Mission Bay, we wanted all of the female Herron tribe to feel that sense of ‘can do,’ to unleash their grit and, of course, to look good doing so. We created our first collection using the Mission Bay inspiration, combined with the goddess mindset, which leads to a question or two.
What is the goddess mindset?
The term “Goddess” describes a female spirit believed to have power over parts of the world or nature - embracing the elements and guiding humanity through everything from love to war. The goddess mindset is when we unleash that sense of self that allows us to be, achieve, and think without boundaries - to embody the Goddess within.
With this mindset in place, success becomes attainable when climbing both mental mountain tops and real-life mountain tops and, above all else, believing in your legend to get there.
What did you do to make it so?
A few things, the first was to power up the design with Goddess inspired power wraps - a reminder each time you see it, and each time you wear it that you can be all you want to be. A mental powerup as only a goddess can source!
The next thing was to show some respect to the wonderful survey responses we received. When individuals make such an effort and share such rich insights (it really was humbling, and we are grateful), we want to act on it and serve our customers exactly how they want. That respect manifested in both the technical designs and hitting the comfort mark and practical pockets in each limited collection item.

I realized I wasn’t alone. As I developed the concept of a sportswear brand for people like me, aged 35+, my goal was to make each of us feel valued as customers and with the distinct feeling that the clothing has been designed with us and our needs in mind - from the service, the design, the models, to this second life we all have with even longer lifespans and sports being readily open to us all at any age.
